In this episode of Maine Responder, Billy and I put First2Respond Jerky to the test. We talk flavor, texture, ingredients, and whether we'd actually recommend it to fellow first responders.

What makes this company stand out isn't just the jerky—it's their mission to support the first responder community.

If you're looking for an honest, unscripted review with a few laughs along the way, this episode is for you.

Elliott: Yeah. I think that's it. Learn, okay. ⁓ All right, man, we're on. We're good. Okay. Here we go. Ready. Lavies here. ⁓ Billy, what's going on, brother? Been a week. Been doing good. Good. Progress all around. I think that's our mode of operation. Yep. Yep. we've been we've been sitting on this one for a little bit, ⁓ on this episode for a little bit, and I I'm excited to do it. Cause it's a review. Yeah, that's a new spin on what we're doing. It's kind of a Yeah, I love I love this and I hope I don't screw this up. I don't I don't think I will, but ⁓ I gotta say, you know, ⁓ you and I have b we've been having a lot of conversations lately about growth and the direction of this podcast and main responder and everything. And one of the things I really, really like is when when I hear first responders out there doing like doing that that side hustle. Right. You know, doing something to you know, make some money, do something ⁓ you know, beyond the career, right? Something that can you know, ⁓ well, like I've like I've been saying, this podcast has been bringing me joy because it's in that kind of creative like that creative element, you know, where I like I don't usually ⁓ I don't usually get that at work. You know, work is fine, but it's not really, you know, this. It's just very, very different. So it's work. It's what we do and it's not necessarily how we you know, it's not guided but what we want to do, so to speak. Right. I mean, yeah, we want to do it, we're there, but this has got a little bit more Self, purpose, and intention. Yep. Give back. Yeah. So this guy, ⁓ Daniel ⁓ Martinez, he's out of ⁓ the left coast, left coast California. And then one of our guys, Ronnie brought ⁓ I I don't know, he was must have been must have been searching online and ⁓ and came across This beef jerky company. Late night Google. Yeah. And ⁓ so, you know, he ⁓ ended up buying a b you know, buying a bunch of it for us, brought it in for us to try. And it was phenomenal. I don't think we tried every flavor, but we there was it was good. It was good stuff. It was enough it was good enough. I think, you know, he reached out and and said, ⁓ you know, maybe we can take this a step further, you know, and and, you know, try ⁓ all, maybe do a review. Maybe what we tried was good. Maybe it was a fluke. I don't know. I'm leaning towards it was good. Everything I tried was pretty good. Right. ⁓ So yeah, so I I I think I wanna just get into that. ⁓ and it's I don't know, it's I think it's gonna be a little weird because there's gonna be like a lot of opening bags and chewing on here, but it's gonna be a lot of excess noise. And I think you just have to kind of deal with it, work through it and understand we're here for the better good of all jerky lovers. So perfect. ⁓ Yeah. So actually it's funny because ⁓ Daniel Martinez, who is ⁓ the owner of this ⁓ first responder, he's he's gonna come on. ⁓ he's gonna come on and join us. Not today, but he's gonna come on down the road to kind of tell the story that was really the inspiration right ⁓ behind this. But you know, but before that, I think we can kind of just, you know, ⁓ talk about this a little bit. And let me get my shit straight because I had it here and now it's gone. Yeah. Mm excuse All right, so All right, so the company is ⁓ first to respond jerky. And like I said, that's owned by ⁓ 21-year law enforcement veteran Daniel Martinez, who owns and operates this ⁓ California-based ⁓ beef jerky company. And the inspiration for this was ⁓ tragic loss of Officer Fernando Arroyos in ⁓ South Central LA. ⁓ And while, you know, while Daniel was assisting with fun fundraising efforts for the family, he ⁓ partnered with a premium jerky manufacturer. And they, you know, they donated some products, helped raise money, ⁓ were really supportive, and that's where this idea started for him. So he ends up starting this ⁓ you know, this side hustle, first to respond jerky. And basically, you know, it's it's brisket beef jerky. Top shelf. ⁓ you know, I I'm I re I'm actually wait I'm dying to get into I'm I'm eyeing those bags for sure. So we got some small batch ⁓ small batch quality cuts of beef. They say, let's see, he says he's got six flavors. ⁓ I already have a favorite from when I tried. I haven't tried them all, but from the ones that I tried, I definitely have a favorite. And again, one of the cool things is that that this this company, First to Respond Jerky, they donate ⁓ twenty-five percent of all proceeds to first responder organizations, initiatives, and ⁓ you know, individuals in need. So and again, if it's you know, it ⁓ one of the notes here it says, you know, firehouse patrol in the office. This is ⁓ you know, he's supporting them and it's definitely a great little snack ⁓ that you can enjoy. And you want to know what what's cool about it too? Look at one of those packages. It's a there's a cool little note on it. I don't know if you see that little white sticker on the bottom. Huh. There's a flosser included. Yeah. So that means you're getting into some good quality jerky. Yeah. That's a that's a that's a good move. That's a sign. That's a good move right there. Cares about his customers. So let's see. So I wanna go through ⁓ I wanna go through the the flavors here. ⁓ he's got a sweet and spicy. Karayaki, a pineapple Serrano. Yes, please. The original peppered. Mm-hmm. A little something called Burnout. And in the the picture right here. And I'm and ⁓ I I'd I'd ask everybody to go take a look. First two respondjerky.com. So first the number two respondjerky.com. ⁓ burnout, like I said, has the ⁓ picture of some lovely peppers on there. It's got me a little nervous. Yeah. It does. It does. And then ⁓ and then the last one I see here is ⁓ barbecue mesquite. Perfect. So here's the question I have for you, Billy. As we try it, I'll I'll kind of I'll describe a little bit more, but where do you want to go? You know you know how like you do a tasting? Is it is it like a beer tasting and you go like light to dark? Yeah, I think we're going traditional. Okay. Traditional, common. So I think the Teryaki, black pepper. Yep. Those two we're gonna have to kind of do a coin toss maybe of which we start off with. The so the original peppered? Yeah, the original peppered with terrified teriyaki, and then there's the the barbecue mesquite. All of all of those seem like they don't have any level of spice. Right. I think we should increase it upon that. Okay. ⁓ you know, traditional, original peppered, teriyaki, and then the mesquite, and then from there I would say the burnout's gotta be last. I I'm gonna think the burnouts gotta be last. Serrano though, that's a beautiful sound. Yeah. With pineapple, so that's sweet. Yeah. That's what I that's my point of view on it. Okay. Okay. I agree with that. I think that's great. So let's start then. Do you see the original peppered over there? Let me let me take a look. Let's crack that thing. Let's see here. Let's also let's see. ⁓ each batch. Got some good reviews on here too. Ariaki. Serrano. Yep. Sweet and spicy. Burnout. You're holding it. I got burnout right here. Yeah. So you're holding ⁓ whoa, whoa. This one's open. ⁓ I gotta let him know that they sent us an open one. Original pepper right there. So I've got the lineup for original peppered, teriyaki, barbecue mesquite, pineapple serrano, sweet and spicy. And over in your hands is the burnout. Yep. So I'm gonna keep that, you know. I think we've got to keep it in separate to know that there's gonna be a drum roll when we hit the burnout. Okay. I like that. I like that. So all right, ⁓ original peppered, crack that baby open. It says ⁓ Seasoned natural blends finished off with a cra ⁓ cracked pepper, cracked a black pepper for a a sharp, satisfying kick. Looking for savory, smoky, and spice and spicy without overpowering the natural flavor of already pulling it out of the bag. That's beautiful. Yeah. That is beautiful. I'm gonna take my piece. Yep. Yep. I'll I'll I'll wait. ⁓ this is how we're gonna do it, huh? Okay. Hmm. Hm. I I couldn't wait, I just jumped in. I kinda figured. That would be some good control on your part if you did. Right out of the gate. Tenderness, cut of meat, you can tell that there's quality there for sure. And I'm not gonna proclaim to be any kind of jerky specialist. But I've had my fair share. Mm. That's delicious. That is good. That is delicious. That I I would say that ⁓ That's probably, you know, jerky. You know what I mean? Like traditional traditional jerky. That's that's I think ⁓ you know, what you're getting there. Really good. Delicious. Tender. Tender. You know? There's some, you know, a good flavor profile for the black peppered. moistness of it. That's very, very palatable, as they would say. I'm excited. I'm I'm jumping right to teriaki. Yeah, get in there. Yeah. Let's go. Yeah. Let's go. All right. Teriyaki coming up. I know, I know ⁓ my man Daniel out there. He's on the left coast. So I I I don't, you know, I'm an East Coast guy, so I threw on my my Brooklyn Dodgers. You know, that's where they originated. So I don't know if he's a Dodgers fan or not, but hey, that's good representation. You know, I try. You know. All right. Passing it off to you. All right. This is teriyaki. Teriyaki, I'm going in. I don't wait for nobody. Nope. Mm. Mm. Okay. Right out of the gate, everybody's teriyaki is overpowered. And I kind of shy away from teriyaki for that purpose. Uh-huh. Daniel, you hit that one on the head. That's perfect. That is such a comfortable amount of teriyaki in there. That's delicious. Man. I'm not that that is delicious. And I y I agree with you a hundred percent. It could be something like this could teriyaki is a hit or miss for me. And it's not usually what I go for because of that. A thousand percent correct. And I'm not blowing smoke. If one of these if one of these sucks, we're gonna say Yeah. If one of these is no good, we're gonna say it. Right now, we're two for two. Yeah. We're two for two. And I'm gonna throw in a disclaimer too. You know, we've we have my path here on what my health and wellness is and blood work. I'm not even supposed to be eating this stuff. ⁓ that's a good thing. My iron, my ferritin is through the roof. Doctor says no red meat. I need to drop my iron considerably. So I'm taking one for the team. So I'm gonna be honest. If I come across something that that I just waste consuming red meat to bump my iron up even more for that flavor, but that teriyaki, I'm gonna be serious now. That's a good teriyaki. I don't like teriyaki because it's always overpowering, but that's delicious. Barbecue mesquite, my favorite kind of potato chip. Good kettle cooked barbecue mesquite. I'll pretty much go for that every time. So I'm excited about this one. Okay. And I stopped doing the little nibbles and I'm just putting the Yeah. Well, you know what's funny, it's because since it is tender, you know, you don't feel like you're chewing and chewing and chewing. I mean that is that is t ow. Mm. That's a little drier. Yep. But still, ⁓ man. That's a banger. That barbecue mesquit mesquite. Mesquite. That barbecue mesquite. I like ooh, there's a little bit of heat at the end. Yep. Little tanginess. Tiny bit tanginess. I like it. Okay. I like it. Yep. Let me see what that that was the mesquite, right? Yes, sir. I just want to see on the or the the notes here. Yeah, give me some notes on it. ⁓ yeah, mesquite smoke, classic barbecue spices. A touch of brown sugar. Did you get that? ⁓ that was yeah. There's the sweet. Yep. Mm-hmm. Pineapple Serrano. Now these all these all these have been described as mild in heat level. Yeah. ⁓ totally. I agree. Yeah. Yep. And Serano I mean, I love Pineapple and then Serrano. Am I wrong? I'm you know, you know me, I'm not a a sports guy, but what was the movie with the guy Serrano and his bat? Was that his name? Yeah, yeah. Hats for bats. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. Yeah. So already you know, I know it's Serrano's a pepper, but you got my guy there from Major League Joe Boo. Yeah. Hmm. Sorry I didn't pass you the bag. ⁓ that's all right. Let's see. All right, so this one Wow. Go ahead. This one says very hot. Hey, I think we might have messed up the order. That's got some heat. Really? Mm-hmm. This one says very hot, yeah. It's good though. I saw a pepper flake on it too. Yep. Fiery fusion. Whoo. Yeah. A blend of juicy pineapple and zesty serrano peppers. Some may say I don't know if the camera can pick that up, but good. That that's that's for real spicy right there. That snuck up on me. ⁓ this that one sweet and spicy. So the sorry, go ahead. Yeah, the pineapple the pineapple serrano was the one that I had one of the ones I had originally. Yes, same. And I I I loved it. It was my favorite at that point. I didn't think it hit me like that at that point though. Really? Because that was one of the sample bags that Ron Yeah. Yep. Got. Yeah, this one ⁓ It it's it's still it's still lingering. It's lingering, but it's a beautiful lingering. It's not bad. Yeah, it's not bad at all. ⁓ well it is. If you don't like spice, you might you might not this might not be your choice. But yeah, buyer beware on that spice. It's when it says very hot, that's very hot. Yeah, that's in it, but it it is good. Not unbearable though. Not at all. It's delicious. The pineapple, it's just a good ⁓ it it does offset it. ⁓ it and complimentary, man. That I still my favorite so far. Yeah. Okay. So we might. digress a little bit with this one 'cause it's sweet and spicy. Okay. I'm just taking the whole piece. Need a little water here to I need a little sippa after that one. Mm-hmm. Shadow. That's an everyday bite right there. Maybe that was a good play to have the pep pineapple serrano before that. 'Cause it kind of eases it down a little bit. Brings you brings you back to ground level. This one does say it's ⁓ it's it is mild. And you're you're right. It is good to bring down the other one, but yeah. ⁓ thi ⁓ again, this one's got ⁓ that brown sugar, molasses. I could definitely taste that. Yep, molasses. I love molasses. A little bit of hint of ⁓ pineapple in there. And some, you know, some pepper season. Yeah. That one's ⁓ That takes me back a little bit to the days of not being so good with my habits. Yeah. Or the red man chew. yeah molasses in there. Yeah. Delicious. So this I would say this is a better alternative, right? Yeah, probably. Probably. That's yeah, I don't I so I get I definitely get sweet. I don't get spicy as compared to the other ones. Yep. ⁓ or the other one, ⁓ pineapple serrano, but Once again, man. Once again, it's it's really good. It's really good. Where where are we at? Which one ⁓ we're on you. It's time. It's time. All right. The drum roll. If there was a button to hit for a drum roll. Okay. That was I don't know if people picked up on that. How he opened that. Very intentional. Precise even. Did we have this one the last time? I I I don't remember. I took a lot. I took a lot. I'm going in. I I'm gonna just go in. There's a lot of seeds on this, man. Look at that. Look at that piece. Look, you could tell you see that? You can see how like tender and and magical that is, man. That looks good. Wow, that's a piece. Yeah. Did you leave any for me? I don't know. I got a little extra over here though. And here's Billy with a little guy. ⁓ hey, what's up, cute little buddy? But again, that's a nice I'm double dipping. Mm. Yeah, you ate three quarters of a bag with that piece. All right, man, yeah. I got a I got look at one. That's okay. I got nuggets here. Mm. That's good. Whoa, okay. Man, that's smooth. What do you got for notes on that? That's a really that's a good This one this one says the spice builds gently without overwhelming. Yeah. A touch of sweetness, ⁓ smoky beef flavor. ⁓ yeah, it's ⁓ sweet heat. Yeah. And actually this one level this one's level hot. So the pineapple serrano I think was even yeah, hotter than this. It definitely. Yeah. And since we t I'm I'm not done eating. Mm-hmm. But since we talked about it, look what I find in the bag. Yep. Don't worry, I'm not gonna do any personal hygiene on the camera. I I really That's genius. That is genius. 'Cause not not only is it for hygiene, but how many times do you just floss and then it's a toothpick? Yeah. So this is a multi purpose tool. Look at that hook. It's got a hook. Yep. You don't want to leave any of that pineapple serrano stuck in a tooth, bro. You want to get that down the down the hatch. You imagine that you stop, you're on patrol, you have a little bit of that, and then all of a sudden the neighborhood kids are out there grabbing something off the ice cream truck and you go like, Yeah, I'll buy. You buy the kids some ice cream and you get some for yourself and you're having a nice little pop of ice cream and all of a sudden that pineapple serrano seed pops out and you're like, Whoa, where did that come from? Yep. Good perspective. Yeah, I think ⁓ I like that burnout. That burnout has a good spice that I could keep going back for. Do you find any smokiness in that? I do. Yeah. I do. Yeah, I do. ⁓ and it does say, you know, it's got that smoky beef flavor. Yep. ⁓ This is the one that you took a big chunk of, right? The burnout? The burnout, yeah. Get back in. Going back in. But I'm I do want to go back into that pineapple. I I just I'm just really impressed by it. Like truly it it is ⁓ it's good. ⁓ just you know, th it's got a good bite, you know, it's a little chewy. ⁓ you know, chewy in a good way, you know what I mean? It's it's I don't know, it just it just it does. It tastes it tastes premium. You don't wanna be gnawing on jerky for a while. Right. You wanna enjoy it, have a little bit of work to it, but ultimately get on to the next piece and There's one piece in there that's evading me. Bro, just just put it right up, like a like the end of a bag of chips, you know what I mean? Like Throw it right down. Maybe there's not. There we go. There's gonna be there's gonna be a seed or something in there that's gonna have you on fire. I think that was a seed that I got. There it is. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So yeah, man, just so you know, right back on this ⁓ on you know on the website there, ⁓ like I said, you know, over 20 year law enforcement veteran. ⁓ I'm just gonna read it because I don't wanna I don't wanna try to summarize it and and miss anything, but ⁓ a 20-year law enforcement veteran who has ⁓ proudly dedicated my life to serving and protecting others within the Los Angeles area. Over the years I've witnessed firsthand the sacrifices that first responders and their families make every day. That experience has fueled my passion for giving back to the community that has given me so much. I started this company with a mission to honor and support fallen first responders and their families. But this is just the beginning. My ultimate goal is to grow this platform into something powerful enough to provide scholarships for the children of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank customers, supporters, friends, and my family. ⁓ your belief in this mission. your continued support have brought us this far. We've made ⁓ small yet incredible strides, but there's still a long road ahead and motivated, more motivated than ever to see it through. This isn't just a business, it's a purpose. And every step we take in the memory of memory of our heroes and in support of the futures they've left behind. That's freaking awesome. I want to say, really, you know, when I popped up this website at first and I looked through everything, that last bit that you said there was really what stood out. This isn't just a business. It's a purpose. And every step we take is in memory of our heroes and in support of the futures they've left behind. That right there, isn't that what we're what we talk about, about being intentional. Yeah, you know, we got these side hustles that do certain things. But there's more to it. So you might not know the complete story, but that's that right there just tells tells so much about why he's doing it and Where other people can yeah hit that mark. Yeah. And and you know, th th that's the other thing too, is like every time I read something like this, you know, and you think about the families left behind and everything, and y you know, it's just I I don't know, it just I could I could, you know, tear up every time. It just it just breaks breaks my heart, you know. Yeah, absolutely. But this is cool and this is like a at this we said we were talking about this earlier. Like doing these little things, you know, and sometimes sometimes like ⁓ I made the joke like a podcast can seem silly, but like this is the kind of the kind of that same mission of like this there's this stuff is out there. You know, there's people out there that are doing these things and they're they're they're out there helping first responders. And that's why I think this is special and that's why I wanted to take, you know, some time. And I'm glad, you know, we stumbled upon it. Right. You know, just just on the internet. And ⁓ and so that was, you know, that was lucky for us, ⁓ I think. And and it's good. You know, it's good stuff. So that's That's what I think is ⁓ even more important. I'm I'm talking a little weird because I am I am a little bit I got some spice on the phone. But yeah. There's a little more extra. Yeah, but it's it's not bad. It's it's not bad at all. ⁓ I actually like that that level of spice. But I I think this is special. I'm so I'm really just s supporting this all the way. ⁓ and you know, one of the cool things that Daniel ⁓ has done for us is is ⁓ offer us here, offer us here in Maine or anybody who's listening to The main responder podcast, ⁓ twenty-five percent off using the code main responder. And as we were kind of going back and forth, ⁓ he does, you know, he does give twenty five percent of the proceeds that that he gets. So whatever whatever is ⁓ whatever we can sell, you know, what if ⁓ people decide to go on and take a look at this and ⁓ and buy some, ⁓ he said he's willing to give back to a nonprofit ⁓ around our area here, support doing, you know, the same mission. That's incredible. So, you know, just hey, if you want to give some jerky a try, you know, ⁓ support support a first responder, support a good mission, and in a sense, su support us because I think, you know, if if ⁓ you know, if ⁓ any of the listeners say, Hey, you what, I'm willing to try this and get a bag or two, you know, ⁓ you know you know it's going to a good cause, first responders somewhere. So I think that's ⁓ I just think that's amazing. I I I love this and I I I wish him nothing but ⁓ absolute success and and the success really comes in in in the giving back, I think, you know. You know, and and and also his his ⁓ inspiration for this, you know, is is is pretty pretty incredible. ⁓ I'm gonna wait till we get him on. Yeah, you know, to really deep dive deep into that story and more of what he's gotta say. But ⁓ but ⁓ Daniel, this is a great ⁓ this is a great product. First to respond, jerky. Really, really good stuff. And ⁓ I'm just happy that ⁓ that you know, that they're doing this, that somebody's out there doing this. I know there's a lot of Companies, businesses, you know, we said side hustles where people are doing this. And I'd love to, I'd love to get them all on. You know what I mean? Like the more we can do to help and more we can do to get the word out, like why not support one another? And and you know, and the job is a lot. So if you, you know, like like I said about the podcast, like if you have an idea, go out there, give it a shot, you know, do something, do something on the side that really just ⁓ you know, I I don't know, you know, we we We could sit in a patrol car, you know, and and do a lot for people, but you know, ⁓ doing something for ourselves, I think. You know, we talk about working out and all all that, but you know, there's a lot of people out there with some great ideas. And I think and you know, cops, firefighter, like I I all the first responders. I always I always default to cops firefighters 'cause those are the, you know, but dispatchers, EMS corrections, everybody. Like there's there's a lot of people in those in those jobs that are that have some great ideas, you know. And I'm sure that a lot of them are do have businesses. We just don't know, you know, what they are. But I don't know. I just the more we know about them, I'm just happy to talk about it and support it. ⁓ you know, i in in any way that that we can here on the on the podcast. Yeah. I c I couldn't agree more. That ⁓ I've got a buddy that always what else? It's his his line. What else? Whether we're having a simple conversation or what can we do next? We're both participating a local ⁓ non profit supporting veteran veterans and and things and around our in our town and we're always like, what else? And especially him, what else can we do? What else can we do? And that's what we ask ourselves. What else can we do to to pick each other up and move people forward? Well I'm gonna go with it one bite at a time. Yeah. So Daniel, yeah. I think, you know, left coast to the correct coast. We appreciate it. We love it. ⁓ We'll probably hear about that one. Yeah, that's okay. ⁓ you're welcome here anytime. Love to talk to you in person. But if we can get you on air here, ⁓ yeah, we've got a place for you. Yeah. So I would just say, you know, this this episode is just to try it, have a little fun, you know, trying it, get the word out. and and really just a teaser for when we can get ⁓ Daniel on here to, you know, to hear. you know, the ⁓ the the rest of the ⁓ the story about first to respond and the and their mission, first to respond jerky and their mission. And that's the important part. Yeah. And ⁓ so if you go on a website, ⁓ they and here's the other thing. Like just obviously, you know, we do a little due d diligence to make sure this is, you know, legit. We we ordered some. We, you know, go on their social media. ⁓ he's out there showing all the stuff that they're doing. I mean he's really ⁓ I it sa seems like kind of blowing up now. Yeah. ⁓ you know, more than I've seen ⁓ recently, but ⁓ they are, you know, I if you go on I think it was I don't know if it was Facebook or Instagram, but you can definitely see ⁓ you know, where they are and and what they're up to. And it all it all seems like really good stuff. ⁓ so I just actually got a text from Daniel. He said the main responder ⁓ code is active, 25% off. It's really easy when you go on the right s ⁓ the website first to respond jerky dot com to just place an order. So I recommend ⁓ I I recommend you give it a shot. That way you'll know that we're not talking nonsense here. Right. It's ⁓ it's actually ⁓ it's actually some good stuff. So what else what else we got, Billy? What else? I think I'm good with that. It feels good. I I enjoy it. I can't wait to, you know, even though the heat's there, that Pineapple Serrano's got me hooked. ⁓ you you need another one? I need another bite of that. Yeah. I enjoyed that heat. I just hit the barbecue mesquite again. ⁓ a glutton for punishment, but I don't think it's punishment. That it's delicious. I do like that little sweat. You know, it's it's middle to the end of June here and we, you know, tort normally do have a little bit of n nicer weather, but it's a little overcast and a little cool. So I'm gonna enjoy the the heat from this.
